Types of Bathroom Sinks

Self Rimming bathroom sinks are offered in a large variety of sizes, shapes, and hole configurations. They are mounted from above the counter with a visible rim and can be used with all types of countertops.

Undermount bathroom sinks are installed from underneath a solid surface counter top, such as granite, marble, stone or man-made material, such as Corian and does not have a “rim”. Counter mounted or wall mounted faucets are common with this design; therefore the number of holes for the faucet is not a factor in this sink application.

Pedestal bathroom sinks are freestanding sinks that sit on their own bases. These sinks are a great space saver making them ideal for smaller bathrooms and powder rooms. When selecting a pedestal sink, be sure to consider the finish of the exposed plumbing items (drain and supply lines) underneath and match them to your faucet.

Vessel bathroom sinks typically sit on top of a counter or furniture top and come in various shapes and designs. Wall-mounted or tall vessel filler faucets that provide adequate clearance above the rim of the sink are common faucets for this application. Some vessel sinks come with pre-drilled holes so that faucets can be mounted directly to the vessel.

Console bathroom sinks combine the style of a pedestal while providing larger counter areas. Console sinks come complete with either (2) or (4) legs for support. The plumbing under the sink will be visible, be sure to consider the finish of the exposed plumbing items (drain and supply lines) underneath and match them to your faucet..

Vanity bathroom tops are a one-piece counter top that has the sink built in and are made from man-made materials, such as Corion . These sinks do not come with bases, be sure to know the exact dimensions of your vanity cabinet to ensure a proper fit. Tops are generally up to 1” larger than the vanity they sit on, which provides a slight overhang.

Vanities are marble countertops complete with a sink basin and carved wood cabinets/bases. The cabinet styles add plenty of storage and come in a variety of sizes, colors and finishes and add an elegant touch to any bathroom.

Wall Hung bathroom sinks are very popular in smaller bathrooms because they are hung directly on the wall and save floor space. They can be installed at any height on a flat wall or in a corner and are often offered with an optional towel bar.

Vitreous China & Fireclay Sinks a ceramic-based material with a smooth and glossy finish that is very durable. These sinks come in a wide range of colors that coordinate with other bathroom fixtures.

Glass Sinks most are made from tempered glass, which are stronger than you would expect. Un-tempered glass should only be installed in rarely used bathrooms. Glass sinks come in many contemporary and eclectic designs.

Stainless Steel Sinks – most are manufactured from 18 or 20 gauge steel and are very strong. Some are undercoated with a sound deadening material that reduces noise. A great option if you are looking for an urban, contemporary or modern styled bathroom.

Enameled Cast Iron Sinks are solid cast iron, layered with a deep enamel surface. These sinks are extremely heavy, long lasting and resist almost any type of structural damage and are available in a wide variety of colors.

Solid Surface Materials - available in a variety of colors and can mimic granite and other high-end stones. They are heat and stain resistant, not completely scratch-proof, but scratches buff out easily.
